Hidden Stories: Women's History

The Tricentennial is about every citizen's history--to find it, preserve it, and tell it.

In the old days, history seemed all about men and power and war. But one important part of Prince George's County history is hidden in the untold stories of women who have lived and worked here.

How can we find the history? One way is be retrieving records of the organizations women have founded. Some were social groups--women's clubs, book groups and sororities. Some were problem-solving associations--perhaps dealing with AIDS, or battered spouses or custody issues in divorce. Some brought together women who shared professional interests, hobbies, or ethnic backgrounds. Be sure that your group's history is in that record.

Under the sponsorship of the Prince George's County Commission for Women, a committee is gathering information on every women's organization, past and present, that has ever operated in the county. Please get in touch with this group if your organization has been overlooked, or has not yet responded. Don't let this important piece of Prince George's County's history be lost.
