CAREERS & LIFESTYLES: WOMEN AT HOME IN HISTORY SYMPOSIUM

Women's life in Prince George's County and the state of Maryland will be the topic of a day-long Tricentennial symposium scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 1996, at Bowie State University. Not just a look at history, the day will offer information about future career opportunities, with audience participation.

Titled "Women at Home in History," the free event will feature well-known historians, researchers, businesswomen and political figures. One of the speakers for the afternoon session, which will feature a panel discussion of educational opportunities and career possibilities for women in the 21st century, will be Maryland Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. The facilitator for the day will be Dr. Zola Boone, vice president of development and university relations at Bowie State University.

In addition to speakers on Prince Georgian women's lives in the colonial and Civil War periods, presentations will be made on "20th Century Educational Alternatives for Women," as well as "Black Women in American Society and Culture."

Participants are scheduled to include Dr. Lois Green Carr, archivist for the state of Maryland; Laurie Verge, historian and site manager of the Surratt House museum; Ella Smart, cooperative extension specialist at the University of Maryland; Dr. Francill e Wilson, University of Maryland assistant professor of Afro-American Studies; Dr. Nancy Booth, associate director of the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service; Elizabeth Buck, president of Buck Distributing Co., Inc.; State Senator Gloria Lawlah; and Dr . Patsy Brannon, professor and chair of the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Maryland.

One of the highlights of the day will be the interpretive exhibit area which will be set up in the commons area of the Martin Luther King building on campus, just outside of the auditorium. Exhibitors will display and discuss early domestic tools, sewi ng tools, invalid feeders, cup plates, quilts and dolls with authentic Civil War costumes. Exhibitors will describe how these artifacts contributed to women's experiences in society. Reference material will be available to document the presentations.

"We hope to get strong participation from all ages of women--high school and college students in particular should be interested in the career opportunities which will be discussed," says symposium coordinator Ella Smart.

While reservations are required, the only charge for participation is a $3 fee for a box lunch. Reservations with accompanying $3 checks may be mailed to Ann McClanahan at 3501 Oliver Street, Hyattsville, MD 20782. For further information about the sy mposium, call 559-7435 or 868-4437.
